Famine Prep / Emergency food storage planner
Emergency food storage planner for your household
Famine Prep is a web app from Urban Root that plans a household food stockpile. You tell it your country, who lives with you, your budget and how long the supply must last. It returns the calories and water to store, what to buy first and in what order, priced in your own currency.
The first three sections are free. No account and no signup.
What it is
Most food storage calculators multiply people by days and print a list of wheat, rice and beans. Famine Prep does that arithmetic too, and then writes the rest of the plan around it: which shops in your country sell the items, what they cost locally, what to grow in your climate, how to ration the stock and what to do each month until the plan is complete.
The report is written by an AI model (Anthropic's Claude) from a fixed brief. That brief sets the calorie and water standards below, so every report counts the same way.
Who it is for
- Households that want to hold a food reserve for 6 months, 1 year, 1 to 2 years, 2 to 3 years or 3 to 5 years.
- Families with children. The report calculates adults and children separately and never reduces a child's calories.
- People in an apartment, a house with a yard, a suburban garden or on rural land. The report takes the setting into account.
- Pet owners. Dogs, cats and other animals get their own section with food, water and medication.
- Anyone outside the United States. Prices come in local currency, and units are metric everywhere except the US.
How it works
- Answer the form. Country, household size, budget bracket, supply period and how many months you have to prepare. Optional fields cover climate, dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free, lactose-free), skills you already have and food you already hold.
- Read the free preview. A situation assessment, your household's calorie mathematics and your top 5 priority purchases.
- Unlock the full report for $19.99. One payment. The licence key arrives by email and regenerates the report when your answers change.
The standards it plans with
2,100 to 2,400 kcal per adult per day. The low end is the Sphere Handbook emergency minimum and the high end is the ICRC standard. The report adds 15 to 25 % for anyone doing sustained manual work, such as gardening or hauling water.
1,400 to 2,000 kcal per child under 12 per day, rising with age.
15 litres of water per person per day for the full period (Sphere Handbook). 7.5 litres is named as an acute floor only.
The calorie section shows three scenarios: Full at 2,100 kcal, Reduced at 1,800 and Emergency at 1,500. The stockpile is sized on Full. Emergency is limited to 2 to 4 weeks and is never used to size the stock.

Limits you should know
All quantities, prices and calorie figures are AI-generated estimates. Check them against current local prices and your household's own needs before you buy. Famine Prep is an information tool. It is not nutritional, medical, veterinary, agricultural or financial advice. The terms give the full wording.
Questions
How much food should a family store for an emergency?
Famine Prep sizes the stockpile on 2,100 kcal per adult per day, the Sphere Handbook emergency minimum, with a range up to 2,400 kcal and 15 to 25 % more for sustained manual work. Children under 12 are planned at 1,400 to 2,000 kcal per day, rising with age. The report multiplies the daily need by your supply period, which runs from 6 months to 5 years, and shows the total energy to store.
How much water does the plan allow?
15 litres per person per day for the whole period, which is the Sphere Handbook minimum for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene. The report names 7.5 litres as an acute short-term floor only, not as the plan basis.
What is free and what does the $19.99 report add?
The free preview has three sections: a situation assessment, the calorie mathematics and your top 5 priority purchases. The full report has 15 sections, or 16 when you have pets, and adds a 20-plus item shopping list, a growing plan, water security, rationing, a budget breakdown and a month-by-month action timeline. You can download it as an HTML file.
Which countries does it cover?
The country list names 66 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. If yours is not listed, pick the Other option for your region and type your country. Prices are given in your local currency.
Are the figures exact?
No. The report is written by an AI model from your answers. Quantities, prices and calorie figures are estimates. Check them against current local prices and your household's own needs before you buy. The report is not nutritional, medical, veterinary or financial advice.
